40th Anniversary Talk Series: "The Way We Were"
Mr. Chiu Kam-shing (Former Assistant Curator of the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware) and Mr. Ip Wing-chi (Principal of Hong Kong Tea Academy & Founder of Hong Kong Chado Association) were invited to share anecdotes from the early years of museum’s establishment and reflect on their unforgettable experiences assisting Dr. K.S. Lo in collecting zisha (purple clay) tea ware.
Mr. Chiu Kam-shing shared his experience collaborating with Mr. Ip Wing-chi on the production of the video “Chinese Tea Drinking”. The video offers a concise overview of the history and development of Chinese tea culture and was previously screened at the museum. Mr. Ip highlighted Dr. Lo’s significant contributions to promoting contemporary purple clay art. When commissioning purple clay teapots in Yixing, Dr. Lo implemented a unique requirement: artisans had to engrave their names on the teapots they crafted, which was a departure from the usual practice for such items. Dr. Lo later arranged for these works to be exhibited at the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware in Hong Kong, where they quickly gained popularity. Many of these artisans subsequently rose to prominence in the field of contemporary purple clay art.
